Myki Timlin
Mykayla is an emerging ceramic artist from Castle Pines, Colorado. While attending St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas, Mykayla took her first ceramics class and fell in love with clay. The slow nature and patience that is required to be a ceramic artist called her to incorporate the artistic practice into her Bachelor’s degree in Religious and Theological Studies by adding minors in Art and Environmental Science. Deeply inspired by the unhurried nature of the environment, her artistic work has included various pieces dealing with climate change impacts around the Texas Hill Country. These works range from three-dimensional wall installations resembling ashe juniper trees of the Hill Country region, to functional work referencing similar textures. Her use of color, and the lack thereof, makes a subtle suggestion of an environment in crisis.
After graduation, Mykayla pursued working at Broad Studios Club House where she expanded her knowledge on instructing classes, making glazes, and studio upkeep. These new avenues of the art business inspired her to question the mining practices and toxicity of commercial glazes and clays.
As a resident at Cobb Mountain, Mykayla aims to put more time into her personal work and learn about land management in the area. She is very excited about this opportunity to pursue natural glaze making and atmospheric firing. Mykayla hopes to experiment with found materials local to the Cobb region and test glaze recipes with a relatively small carbon footprint, all while increasing her understanding of chemistry in atmospheric firing.
