Lucas Schick
Lucas found clay in high school and knew that it was the start of a lifelong relationship. He heard about Penland School of Crafts from a guest artist at school and when he graduated, he drove out to take a workshop on wood firing. Lucas wanted to continue working with clay and specifically atmospheric firing full time and happened to meet William Baker and Joy Tanner, who needed an assistant. He moved from Kansas City to Spruce Pine, NC to assist them for 2 years. During that time he was also a part of a couple crews firing Anagama and Train kilns. Lucas got the chance to help build wood kilns and soda kilns at private studios and one at the Penland School of Crafts, where he has taken a few workshops and concentrations over the years, as well as assisting August 2023.
Lucas’ work is often functional and focused on tea/sake ware and he has been experimenting with sculptural pieces as well. Lucas is inspired by organic forms that are present when we take a hike in the mountains or sit by a river, and he hopes to play with the clay to find textures and shapes that have subtle hints back to those moments. Lucas is excited to continue growing in his studio practice, finding flow and new creative ways to work with clay and wood firing during his residency.
